THE 5 PRINCIPLES OF SUN SAFETY

1. BEWARE THE STRENGTH OF THE SUN Skin damage can start within minutes of exposure. Also, avoid spending prolonged periods
outdoors when the sun is at its strongest - between 11am and 3pm.

2. COVER UP Understanding what skin type you have and what sun screen is right
for you is essential. Opt for a sun screen with at least SPF 15
that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Ensure the
sun screen is re-applied at regular intervals.

3. ENJOY IN MODERATION It is easy to overdo the sun so try setting yourself a
time limit and then take a break. Find some shade
or cover up. Loose fitting clothes with a tight weave
and hats with a wide brim offer the best protection.

4. BE PREPARED It is easy to misjudge the weather. Even on a cloudy day, 30% to 50% of the
sun's UV rays still reach your skin so it is possible to burn. Whether at home
or abroad, try to plan ahead by wearing sensible clothing or carrying sun
cream if out and about.

5. STAY HYDRATED Drink lots of water to keep your body cool and hydrated, which will help limit
your chance of getting sun stroke or heat exhaustion. Aim to drink at least
half a litre of water every hour and avoid alcohol and coffee which will
contribute to dehydration.
